Bring the theme into the modern architecture.
Online Store 2.0 changed the way Shopify themes work in 2021 — JSON templates instead of static Liquid pages, section groups that can render across templates, dynamic sources from metafields and metaobjects, and app blocks that drop in without theme edits.
Vintage themes still function, but they lock you out of most modern apps, most editorial flexibility, and most of the Shopify roadmap. An upgrade is rarely optional in the long run — only “when” is up for debate.
We upgrade themes preserving the existing design (same visual experience, modern foundation) or refresh the design during the upgrade — whichever fits the moment. Either way: JSON templates, settings-driven sections, metaobject modeling, and a documented hand-off.

How we upgrade.
- Phase 01
Audit
Inventory templates, sections, customizations, and app injections in the Vintage theme. Document what should carry over verbatim and what should change.
- Phase 02
Build
New OS 2.0 theme built from the audit. Section schemas, JSON templates, metaobjects, and app block placements all wired up.
- Phase 03
QA & cutover
Theme verified across all templates, currencies, and devices. Published from preview to live; old theme retained as a fallback.
- Phase 04
Editorial training
Editorial team walked through new sections, blocks, and metaobjects. Documentation handed over.

What is Online Store 2.0?
Shopify's modern theme architecture, launched in 2021: JSON templates instead of Liquid templates, section groups, app blocks, metafields and metaobjects as dynamic sources, and richer merchant editing. Required for most modern apps and theme features.
Do we have to upgrade?
Not technically — Vintage themes still work. But many modern apps, features, and Shopify roadmap items require OS 2.0, and editorial flexibility is dramatically better. Most engagements upgrade before they hit a feature wall.
Can we keep our design?
Yes — the upgrade can preserve the existing visual design while modernizing the underlying theme architecture. Or we can use the upgrade as a chance to redesign at the same time. Your call.
How long does an upgrade take?
4-8 weeks for a same-design upgrade. 8-14 weeks if the upgrade also includes a redesign or significant feature additions.
Will any apps break?
Some Vintage-only apps need replacement. Modern apps generally work better in OS 2.0 — many provide native theme app extensions on 2.0 that they cannot offer on Vintage.
